DIY Outfit – Army Jacket

One of my big wishes for my fall wardrobe is a lightweight army jacket like this one by Current/Elliott. Living in LA, this is the kind of jacket I can wear for Fall and most of Winter. It gives just enough warmth plus it's super cool and on-trend. I've only dabbled a little bit in jacket and coat sewing and with one exception I've never really been happy with the results. But that was a long time ago and it might be time to dive in again. Read on to see how I would DIY my own army jacket.

How to DIY an Army Jacket

Step 1: Our inspiration garment today is the Current/Elliott Lone Soldier Army Jacket. I love all the stud and pocket details on this jacket plus the three quarter length sleeves, gathered waist and hip length look ultra-flattering, and more feminine than one made for the boys.

Step 2: Simplicity 2153 is a very close match to our inspiration jacket. View C has the right sleeves, pockets and gathered waist detail. Swap in the pointed collar from View A and you'll have a perfect match.

Step 3: For the fabric, I'd look for a medium weight cotton twill like this one from fabric.com. Then add some gold studs on the shoulders and collar for a bit of flair.
